The home team gets the best calls from referees in a football game

It is true that home team gets the best calls from referees, but that does not happen in every football game. There are instances where the home teams suffer from referees’ wrong decisions, even in the top flight football. For the fact that the home teams have their fans and crowd behind them in football games, referees are bound to make mistakes in their decisions. Most times, the crowd supports the home team by making unnecessary shouts thereby forcing the referee to make some wrong decisions against the visiting team. But there are times when the referees are not moved by the shouts or unnecessary calls from the crowd in football games, and in some cases the visiting team gets the best calls from the referee. This article will highlight instances where the visiting team gets the best calls in a football game in the discourse below.

In the English Premier League, when teams like Chelsea FC, Manchester united, Liverpool and Arsenal who are being referred to as the “Big Four” in recent seasons visit other teams, the home teams are not usually favored by the referee’s decisions, rather it goes the other way round. The reason for this preferential treatment is simply because these favored teams are wealthy, well known, and they have world class managers and people who protect their interests. Some referees and match officials are also secret admirers of these big teams or their managers, and they try to favor them in both home and away games. But in football games involving two of these so called big four in the English Premier League, the referees are very careful so that non of the teams will be offended by their decisions in both home and away games.

In the Spanish La Liga, the story remains the same when teams like Real Madrid or Barcelona are the visiting teams against other teams. As with the “Big Four” in England, these two giants of Spanish football in recent times get the best calls from the referee when they are hosting or visiting other teams that play in the Spanish La Liga. The referees seem to be careful in matches between the so called “Giants” in the Spanish La Liga.

The situation does not change when teams like AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus engage other teams in a football game in the Italia Seria “A”. Juventus and AC Milan were guilty of Match fixing three seasons ago which actually resulted in Juventus being relegated to Seria “B”. This is to show that it is not all the time that the home team gets the best calls in a football game.

Chelsea FC did not qualify for the finals of the 2008/2009 UEFA Champions League as a result the referee’s decision not to give them one out of four penalty appeals against Barcelona at their home ground (Stamford Bridge). The fact that this incident happened at Chelsea’s home game shows that the home team does not always get the best calls in a football game.

These instances clearly make the assertion that the home team gets the best calls in a football game untrue. We can only say that the home team is favored by the referee’s decisions in most games, but not in all the football games.
