Ways to Increase Your Savings

One of the biggest problems that people face in life is inability to save part of whatever they earn as their income. Some people are guilty of owing huge debts even before they receive their salaries and wages. Some other people can save a little, but lack the necessary skills needed to increase their savings, while there are some other people who falsely believe that all the available ways to increase their savings are too risky to be considered. This article is designed to help those who are willing to increase their savings through simple steps that will be analyzed in the discourse that follows immediately.

First of all, you must discipline yourself to develop a daily, weekly, monthly or yearly savings plan. If you really wish to increase your savings you should try as much as possible to save a part of what you earn on a daily, weekly, monthly or yearly basis which should be a minimum of 10% , depending on individual’s preference and goals. Please, do not spend all your earnings and avoid being in debt before your salary or wage arrives.

You should avoid being on a high spending spree. One of the things that put people in debts is the way they spend without looking back, once their salaries or wages arrive. You should endeavor to minimize your spending, and buy only the things that are very important to you. You should buy things according to your needs and not according to your wishes and desires. If you do this, you will be in control of your spending, and it will also help you to avoid being on a high spending spree.

In order to increase your savings, you should commit your money to businesses and investments you really understand. Investments help to increase personal savings by wider margin, but it is very important to know your risk appetite before going into any form of investment you choose, and you should be able to acquire the necessary skills needed for the business or investment you wish to embark on. There are different forms of investments which include investing in shares, bonds, real estate, FOREX etc. The most important thing you should consider when choosing any form of investment is the necessary skills needed to excel in such investments.

It is very important to diversify your investment. What this means is that you should invest your money in different forms of investments and not just restricting yourself to one or two out of numerous investment plans. Even when you are picking the stock market as one of your investment plans, you should avoid putting all your money only in one company or sector. The reason for this is that putting all your money in only one form of investment is suicidal. It will be difficult to bear it, if all your savings disappear in a twinkling of an eye due to collapse of one investment.

I strongly believe that you will increase your savings, if you will adhere to these simple steps mentioned above, and combine them with other effective steps that are already in your possession.

THE PROBLEM OF AFRICA IS NO LONGER THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF COLONIALISM

Some decades after the independence of African countries, some scholars still point to the negative effects of colonialism as the cause of Africa’s underdevelopment. They argue that as a result of the exploitation of both human and material resources of Africa by major European powers, the continent has found it difficult to pursue positive economic and technological development. And scholars in this category still point out that the continent is still under indirect colonialism (neocolonialism). This article will try to highlight the points which are used to refute this assertion in the discourse below.

It is a known fact that colonialism is a contributory factor to the underdevelopment of Africa in the way that Africa’s resources were used to develop Europe by the Europeans who colonized Africa. But after some decades of independence of African countries, should we still hold on to colonialism as a problem and neglect the obvious? It is clear that the indirect colonialism that some scholars claim Africa is still suffering from is possible because our leaders are allowing it to be so. We as Africans should look beyond our colonial past to search for the causes of our backwardness and underdevelopment. We also need to ask ourselves some salient questions. What measures and strategies have our leaders taken and adopted towards achieving positive development? What is the actual level of development in most African countries decades after regaining independence? What measures have African leaders taken to check the intrusion by the major world powers into Africa” s internal affairs and foreign policy decision making? If the answers to these questions are justified, colonialism should be held responsible for Africa” s underdevelopment. But, if it is otherwise, colonialism should be left alone and let us solve the problems we still allowed to linger on after decades of independence. We should not forget that United States was one time colony of Great Britain. But today, United States is at the helm of world affairs.

After the independence of most African countries, our leaders were busy pursuing their personal interests and embezzling public funds instead of planning ways of developing the continent. Our leaders left the continent to be exploited by major world powers for their own gains and to the detriment of the masses. The level of corruption in most African countries continues to increase on a daily basis. The military on their part did not help matters as the corruption which they claimed they came in to fight against became a way of life after their exit.

If Africa must grow and develop, our way of thinking, our approach towards values and our attitude towards development must change.

The home team gets the best calls from referees in a football game

It is true that home team gets the best calls from referees, but that does not happen in every football game. There are instances where the home teams suffer from referees’ wrong decisions, even in the top flight football. For the fact that the home teams have their fans and crowd behind them in football games, referees are bound to make mistakes in their decisions. Most times, the crowd supports the home team by making unnecessary shouts thereby forcing the referee to make some wrong decisions against the visiting team. But there are times when the referees are not moved by the shouts or unnecessary calls from the crowd in football games, and in some cases the visiting team gets the best calls from the referee. This article will highlight instances where the visiting team gets the best calls in a football game in the discourse below.

In the English Premier League, when teams like Chelsea FC, Manchester united, Liverpool and Arsenal who are being referred to as the “Big Four” in recent seasons visit other teams, the home teams are not usually favored by the referee’s decisions, rather it goes the other way round. The reason for this preferential treatment is simply because these favored teams are wealthy, well known, and they have world class managers and people who protect their interests. Some referees and match officials are also secret admirers of these big teams or their managers, and they try to favor them in both home and away games. But in football games involving two of these so called big four in the English Premier League, the referees are very careful so that non of the teams will be offended by their decisions in both home and away games.

In the Spanish La Liga, the story remains the same when teams like Real Madrid or Barcelona are the visiting teams against other teams. As with the “Big Four” in England, these two giants of Spanish football in recent times get the best calls from the referee when they are hosting or visiting other teams that play in the Spanish La Liga. The referees seem to be careful in matches between the so called “Giants” in the Spanish La Liga.

The situation does not change when teams like AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus engage other teams in a football game in the Italia Seria “A”. Juventus and AC Milan were guilty of Match fixing three seasons ago which actually resulted in Juventus being relegated to Seria “B”. This is to show that it is not all the time that the home team gets the best calls in a football game.

Chelsea FC did not qualify for the finals of the 2008/2009 UEFA Champions League as a result the referee’s decision not to give them one out of four penalty appeals against Barcelona at their home ground (Stamford Bridge). The fact that this incident happened at Chelsea’s home game shows that the home team does not always get the best calls in a football game.

These instances clearly make the assertion that the home team gets the best calls in a football game untrue. We can only say that the home team is favored by the referee’s decisions in most games, but not in all the football games.

Should The English Premiership Take Games Overseas?

In recent years, the English Premier League has become the most exciting and interesting League to watch across the globe. As a result of its wide popularity, some people have continued to ask whether it will be good to take premiership games overseas. Although the English premiership is always exciting for both soccer players and fans across the globe, to take premiership games overseas is quite unreasonable. If such a decision would be taken which I doubt, it will not favor the English League players and fans in any way. In this article, I will try to highlight some points that make the decision to take Premiership games abroad unreasonable and unfavorable for the English League Players, their fans and would- be hosts. These reasons will be highlighted in the discourse that follows.

No matter how close any overseas country may be to England, taking Premiership games overseas will bring more fatigue among players. Long travels usually result to tiredness of players before any game, that is, if they have lesser time to do some training. If the English FA decides to take the action of moving some Premiership games overseas, they will not be helping the players, as the teams will have little time left to train, and as a result, their match fitness will always be called to question. When this sort of thing happens, the general performance of would- be affected Premiership teams would drop drastically.

At this point, the cost implication will be put under consideration. If the aforementioned action is taken, which is, taken Premiership games overseas; it will cost both the English FA and Football Clubs a lot of money to be able to organize such games. For the Football Clubs, transporting both players and fans to a long distance destination will cost them a fortune. This will lead to a sharp drop in the number of fans each team will be traveling with whenever it comes to overseas games, and the games will not be lively with less English fans on the stands.

On the part of would- be host countries, any decision to host Premiership games would hamper the progress of their own domestic league. We cannot deny the fact that the English Premiership games are exciting to watch, therefore, for a country to agree on hosting them, will simply turn their citizens into watching Premiership games at the expense of their own domestic League games. It certainly will not be helping any country that aims to increase the number of their domestic league viewers.

The English Premiership games are normally exciting to watch, but a decision to take some of the games overseas would be unfavorable not only for Premiership players and fans, but also for would- be hosts.

Should one's faith influence a citizen's vote?

Faith may mean different things in different context usage, but in the context of this article, it has to do with one’s religious belief. It will not be good for people to allow their votes to be influenced by faith. If a country’s citizens should allow their faith to influence their votes, the growth, development and progress of that country could be put in jeopardy. For this and some other reasons that will be highlighted by this article, I strongly oppose that one’s faith should influence his votes in any election.

First of all, religion should be separated from politics because it hinders a country’s growth and development. The reason for this is that whoever that is in power will easily get confused with the interference by the religious group he or she belongs to in the process of carrying out his or her own programs. In the area of voting, most people will be voting against their conscience where the influence of faith is present. For instance, if a Muslim and a Christian were to come out for an election, and one has good political records, while the other person has bad political records, without making any serious efforts to improve. Do you have to vote for the person with bad political records because you belong to the same faith?

Allowing faith to influence a citizen’s vote encourages division among citizens of a country. It is obvious that if faith influences citizens’ votes, the religion with the highest population in a country will always emerge as winners in any election, leaving other religious groups as minorities all the time. This will surely lead to hatred between believers of the faith with lower population and believers of the faith with higher population, and as a result, more division are encouraged which in turn hinder growth, development and progress in any country.

Finally, religion will now base on the need of individuals, rather than belief. If faith is allowed to influence citizens’ votes, more people will be tempted to join that faith with greater number of population in order to stand a chance in winning an election. People will continue to change from one religion to the other, just as they cross- carpet from one political party to the other in a bid to get majority votes cast in elections. When this sort of thing happens, it will only result in people joining a religion because they are in need of being elected, not because they believe in or convinced to believe in such faith.
I strongly oppose that faith should influence a citizen’s vote as a result of the aforementioned reasons and some other reasons not mentioned in this article. A citizen’s vote should be influenced by conscience and personal conviction, not by faith.

Should Marijuana Be Legalized?

Marijuana is one of such drugs obtained from the hemp plant, which makes people to behave and act in an abnormal way after its consumption. From my knowledge of this drug (marijuana), it sometimes results to brain damage, especially when it is being taken in excess or when an individual’s brain capacity is not strong enough to contain it. Legalizing Marijuana should not come up as an option, if we consider the negative effects it has brought to our society in general. If some people believe it has some advantages, and that its use should be legalized, I vehemently oppose this view for the fact that societal violence it has increased over the years has continued to be a threat to peace, and it calls for concern. The reasons for opposing that marijuana should be legalized will be highlighted in the discourse below.

In the first instance, let’s consider the enormity of societal violence such as robbery, rape, bullying, etc that marijuana has helped to increase. It is a known fact that when marijuana is being taken in excess which addicts are guilty of, it makes people to go out of control, and as a result of loss of control, people easily indulge in activities that endanger the lives of other people. The funny thing is that people who are under the control of this drug believe that whatever they are doing at the time of its influence is proper, but in reality, it is not. Some robbers and rapists do take marijuana before carrying out their wicked activities, just to be high and fearless during their operations. Some of these people do regret their actions when the influence of this drug clears. This shows that without taking marijuana, some people will not be involved in these foolish acts thereby helping to decrease rather than increase societal violence.

Secondly, the intake of marijuana sometimes make some people who cannot contain it go mad. Personally, I have witnessed where this sort of thing happened to people I know. Since the intake of this drug especially by smoking it increases the number of mental cases in our society, I do not think that legalizing it will do us any good; instead it will hinder growth, development and progress of individuals in our society.

Lastly, legalizing this harmful drug will certainly bring uncontrolled atmosphere in sports and games. If marijuana be legalized, sports officials and referees will be at the receiving end as both the players and their fans will no longer be controlled when they are under the influence of this drug. A player can easily beat up an official when a decision goes against him, because people can do unimaginable things when they are under the influence of drugs. On the other hand, violence among sports fans will greatly increase as most of them will take drugs in excess before any game in order to be in high spirit to support their teams, and when a decision goes against their teams, I wonder what the fate of the officials would be after such a game.

I strongly maintain that marijuana should not be legalized, because the kind of violence that it helps to increase in our society is exactly not what our society needs.

Should Christians have to work on Sunday?

Over the years, people have continued to engage in overheated arguments, dragging whether Sunday is actually the Sabbath day, and as a result of this, some Christians now think or believe that working on Sunday is right. The fact remains that the Christians decided to choose Sunday as the day of worship as a result of the significant things that happened on that day such as Christ’ s resurrection. It is clear that this is the foundation on which the Christian faith stands, and for Christians to choose that day as their day of worship of the Almighty God is understandable.

It is true that the Holy Bible records that God created the world in six days, and on the seventh day he rested. We cannot really be certain that the creation started on a Sunday which is the first day of the week, and rested on a Saturday which is the seventh day. It is possible for that first day to be a Monday, Tuesday or any other day. The most important thing is that one day should be set aside for God’s worship and we as Christians having chosen Sunday as that day should avoid working on that day.

The question of whether Christians should work on Sunday should not arise, if we bring Deuteronomy 5: 12- 15 into perspective. Deuteronomy 5: 12- 15 reads “12 Keep the Sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD your God has commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labour, and do all the work: 14 But the Seventh day is Sabbath of the LORD your God: in it you shall not do any work, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your Ox, nor your Ass, nor any of your cattle, nor your stranger that is within your gates; that your manservant and your maidservant may rest as well as you……….”

From the extract, it is clear that no true Christian should consider working on Sunday since the Holy Bible is our guide, and for the fact that we have chosen Sunday to be our Sabbath, working on that same day should not be part of our plans.

As some Christians have decided to be working all the days of the week and Sunday inclusive, I wonder which day they will set aside for the worship of their creator. If this observance was not that important, I do not think that it will be part of the Ten Commandments that was handed over to Moses on Mount Sinai as the Holy Bible records in Exodus 20: 1- 17.

As Christians, we should endeavor to obey the word of God, and keeping the Sabbath day holy without doing any work on that day should be part of the obedience.

Should All Nations Be Allowed To Join FIFA And Compete For The World Cup?

The FIFA World Cup is one of the most celebrated events in the world which allows countries from different continents of the world to compete in interesting tournaments at the Under- 17, 20 and the senior levels. Since the main objective of the World Cup is to promote peace and unity among all nations, which it is actually helping to achieve, no Nation or independent countries should be restricted from competing in this great FIFA event in order to achieve the objectives for which it is being established. The reasons for supporting that all Nations should be allowed to join FIFA and compete for the World Cup will be highlighted by this article in the discourse below.

The first reason to consider in this article is the fact that FIFA is a world body, the World Cup which it helps to conduct is a world event, and all independent Nations are part of the World. Since this fact remains the way it is, I do not think that restricting some Nations to join FIFA or competing for the World Cup is in the best interest of the world. If this should be adhered to, then FIFA should cease to be a world body, and the World Cup which it conducts should no longer be regarded as a world event. The only period that this restriction should apply is when a country disobeys international law.

Secondly, the objectives for which FIFA was established which comprise promoting world peace and unity among other objectives should be put under consideration. Although the World Cup is an event where Nations compete for a champion to emerge at the end of the tournament, it also helps to promote world peace and unity. After each game at the World Cup, we always see players and coaches of different teams exchanging pleasantries whether they win or loose. This is a good sign of peace and unity of different countries of the world being promoted. Since this is a positive development, I wonder why some countries should be restricted in being part of it.

Lastly, we should consider the love of the game, and the sense of belonging which it creates among nations. We cannot deny the fact that the FIFA World Cup is being loved by citizens of all nations, and the sense of belonging which it creates cannot be compared to any other event. The expectation to compete in the World Cup is always high. For this reason, no Nation should be restricted in being part of this event in order to encourage love, peace, and unity among Nations of the world.

I strongly maintain that all Nations should be allowed to join FIFA and compete for the World Cup because it promotes world peace and unity, and also helps to create sense of belonging among all nations even the politically, economically, or militarily weak nations are not left out.

Sabotaging your success with self-doubt and fear

In life, every individual’s desire is to become successful in whatever activities or events they are involved in. Students hope to succeed in their academic pursuits, Investors and business owners expect to succeed in their investments and businesses, Soldiers hope to be conquerors, Workers expect to excel in their work places, Couples wish that their marriages will be successful etc, but most of the time these good wishes for success are not fulfilled because they are being sabotaged with doubts and fear with the use of negative thinking. This article will examine the reasons for this and offer solutions that might help to correct it in the discourse that follows immediately.

People always have good wishes, but they end up destroying their good wishes through doubts and fear, and one of the reasons is that most of the time people engage in negative thinking, which is different from the good things they wish to achieve at any point in time. The direct result of this is not being able to actualize their wishes. When there is a disparity between what one wishes and what he continually thinks about in his mind, the wishes do not normally come through as expected. Individuals’ wishes will always be in agreement with their inner thoughts for their wishes to come through.

People are guilty of destroying their envisaged success with self doubt and fear because they lack the necessary courage, willpower and determination needed to excel in their endeavors. It takes a lot of courage, willpower and determination to excel in any form of activity or event, therefore when individuals lack these qualities, the fear of inability to complete the tasks ahead of them creeps in, and in the long run, it helps in sabotaging the success which they hope to achieve at the initial stage. Another thing that can easily arouse fear in individuals is the belief that what they are hoping to achieve is bigger than them without really making serious efforts to get those wishes they have, to come to its total fulfillment.

In order to correct or control this action of sabotaging success with fear and self doubt, you have to consider doing the following things:

Build your self confidence: You should try to build your self confidence through the most effective means available to you in order to conquer fear.

Be cautious of what you think, about what you hope to achieve: You should always try as much as possible to be careful or cautious of what you think in your inner mind about your envisaged success. Negative thoughts destroy success, while positive thoughts help to build it.

Finally, you should always try to believe in yourself and abilities in order to remove self doubt from your thoughts.

We all wish for success in different areas of our engagements, but in order to make our wishes to come through, we should endeavor to use our thoughts in the right manner.

Reasons for Playing or Supporting Soccer

Over the years, soccer also known as football outside the US has been one of the most interesting games that is being watched by soccer fans across the globe. The enthusiasm that people feel while watching or playing the game of soccer is amazing. The happiness that both soccer players and their fans feel when their team wins a soccer game is beyond measure. Both players and their soccer fans have different reasons for either playing or supporting the game of soccer, and these reasons will be highlighted by this article in the discourse below.

From the players and coaches point of view, soccer brings a feeling of joy and happiness especially when your team is winning in a soccer game. You cannot imagine the happiness that both players and coaches feel for emerging victorious at the final of major tournaments or Leagues like the World cup, soccer event of the Olympic Games, The English League, The Spanish La Liga, The Italia Seria A, The German Bundes Liga, The Europa League, and The UEFA Champions League. When you are directly involved in winning a trophy at major tournaments, the joy that comes with it is too great.

The income aspect cannot be left out. I think that one of the reasons more people are engaging in playing soccer today is because of the motivating factor which is income that it brings. Both coaches and players alike earn a substantial amount for doing what they enjoy and love to do. We cannot deny the fact that some Government workers are not earning up to half of what most players earn today as their salary, and this motivation has made the number of soccer players to be on the increase on a daily basis. On the other hand, becoming a soccer player makes ordinary people famous. For instance, Christiano Ronaldo’s name has spread far and wide as a result of his prowess in this game of soccer.

From the fans point of view, we cannot take away the joy they feel when their teams emerge victorious in any game. During a soccer game, the fans are very happy when their teams score a goal, and the happiness is much greater when their teams actually win a game. In major tournaments, a soccer team fan club is almost going nuts, when their team emerges victorious and crowned as the tournament’s champions. The story is also the same at different soccer leagues in Europe and the world in general.

People have their different reasons for either playing or supporting soccer, and most of the time, these reasons are common depending on the extent of involvement.

Man is Made and Unmade by Himself

In life, most people are always guilty of blaming circumstances or the environment whenever they fail to succeed in any project, but when they succeed in their endeavors; they are always quick to take the glory. People in this category allow circumstances or the environment to take the blame whenever they fail, but accept responsibility for success whenever they succeed.
As individuals, we have the power to create and power to destroy, and this power lies in what we habitually think about. Man is made and unmade by himself in the sense that it is what we continually think that comes as our reality. This is not only applicable to some areas of our lives, but all the areas of our lives are being affected by this. Most times, people wish to acquire the good things of life which may include riches, good houses, nice cars, good wife or husband, wonderful kids etc but end up not getting them. The reason for not getting what we desire to get lies with what we think about.
People do not actually think that bad things should happen to them, but the doubts they have within their moments of thinking about what they greatly desire or hope to achieve make their goals unreachable. The reason for not reaching some of the goals we set for ourselves is doubt. Most times, people have good wishes for themselves, but when they start thinking about those wishes, they start doubting their abilities and possibilities of getting good results. This is exactly where thoughts turn good wishes to bad wishes, and that is how man slowly but steadily destroys his goodwill and heart desires. When doubts start coming into people’s thoughts, the result is failure to reach their goals. When this happens, people start seeing their goals as unachievable and their dreams as too big to be fulfilled. Self doubt is the greatest weapon that destroys a man without delay.
Few people who actually survive self doubt find it difficult to implement what they actually think about. The fact remains that good wishes are worthless if they are not acted upon. Can a man’s good wish of becoming a qualified medical doctor come to pass if he refuses or fails to study medical related courses in school in order to get the necessary certificate to become one? People who do not act on their good wishes will only succeed in allowing their wishes to be ordinary hope which is not going to come through.
Man is actually made and unmade by himself because it is what he habitually thinks and does that manifest in reality. Circumstances and environment are not the determinants of success or failure.

Looks, Money, or Character: Choosing What's Important

Every individual that exist in our today’s world will love to possess these three things- looks, money and character, but which of these three things is more important than the others. As individuals who wish for good things of life, we will consider all these three things mentioned above as very important, but if you are asked to choose, which of them do you consider most important. You should desire to look good so that when others see you, they will appreciate the good works of God in you by mere looking at you. You also need money to take care of your basic needs in life, and above all you wish to be a person with distinctive qualities and have a good reputation.

From my own point of view, character is the most important, followed by money, and then looks should be the last in the list. Before going into the reasons for my choice, it will be pertinent to consider the three things mentioned above as it concerns human nature. Although some people may choose differently, the fact remains that every individual is absolutely entitled to his or her own opinion.

Looks is actually the last in the list as I have chosen. It is always good to look good, and people will continue to appreciate you if you are handsome or beautiful, but that does not help you to earn much respect from the society especially when you lack money and character. I have seen ugly people do great things, and as a result of their exploit, their ugly nature is no longer remembered. When a beautiful lady or handsome man has a questionable character, the society easily frowns at such persons. Beauty may be appreciated without money, but it is difficult to appreciate beauty without good reputation.

When it comes to money, it is important to have enough of it to be able to take care of personal needs, but you cannot trade money for character. You may have all the money in the world, but without good reputation, money looses its value. For instance, Iron Mike Tyson the boxer was once a very rich man, but at his peak as a heavy weight champion, people do not regard him as a responsible person, although he had enough money at that time. This kind of attitude that people had towards him was due to his questionable character.

Character is actually the most important of the three things mentioned in this article, because it is what tells who a person really is. Character gives a person real value. It is used to determine how people are going to regard you in the society. No matter the situation, people will always respect you if you have good reputation even without money and beauty.

I adore people not by their beauty or money they have, but by their good reputation which is their character. Your character interprets who you are.

Is Competition In School Helpful or Harmful To The Students?

The school environment provides students with different kinds of competitive activities in different areas. Competitions that exist among students in school include; reading competitions, quiz competitions, debates, sports, games etc. Some individuals believe that these activities help to improve the students mentally and physically, while some others think that they actually serve as a source of discouragement to low competitive students. This article will try to highlight some reasons or factors that propel my decision into supporting that competition in school is actually helpful to students in the discourse that follows.

When we consider some of these activities, where students compete among themselves such as quiz competitions and debates, we will notice that the students are always striving to surpass each other, and in so doing, they succeed in improving their mental capacity and building their Intelligence Quotient. This improvement could not have been very effective without the competitions. It is a clear fact that debates help students to measure their ability to defend or support a subject or topic they claim to have much knowledge about. Debates also help students to learn how to be bold in public while expressing themselves. It also helps students to measure their convincing power as a result of the marks that are being awarded to each speaker for their efforts to convince a moderator. On the other hand, quiz competitions help students to measure their extent of knowledge about a particular subject in comparison to their fellow classmates. Students also build their Intelligence Quotient with the help of quiz competitions.

Sports and games help students to be agile and physically fit. The competitions that normally exist in sports and games help students to learn how to work as a team and individually. It is during sports competitions that students measure their abilities and how good they are in a particular sport; as a result, students use the knowledge of their proficiency to build successful careers on those sporting activities they are good at. The competitions that exist in games like the game of chess help students to learn how to develop winning strategies individually with the use of meticulous thinking. Just like any other school competition, sports and games actually help students to develop sharp thinking and useful strategies as a result of the need and urgency to win. Students’ true capacity in any sports will be unknown without the presence of competitions.

In contrast to some people’s opinion that competition in school is harmful to the students, I strongly believe that it actually encourages and challenges students to do more when they witness the prowess of their fellow students in any school competition.

Is It True That Happy People Are Productive People?

Using generalization in presenting arguments most times lead to incorrectness or wrong perception of an idea, and presenting happy people as productive people as an argument should not be an exception to this fact. Just as I may not totally agree with the above assertion, I will also not agree that happy people are not productive. The reason is simply because of generalization. It may be easier to argue that most happy people are productive or not productive as the case may be.

To link emotion of happiness with productivity may not produce a good argument in the sense that productivity may not solely be determined by happiness. This can only mean that other factors such as intelligence, diligence, hardwork, persistence, etc should be put under consideration. It may not be possible for people to be productive without having the necessary qualities needed to be productive in any activity they engage in or in different situations they may find themselves.

If truth should be told, in our different experiences and encounters in life, we cannot deny the fact that there are happy people we met who were not actually productive. The reason for this may be that they lack other qualities they need to achieve a great deal in the things they do. Although, emotionally, happiness is a quality that people who wish to be productive in their activities should possess, but the fact remains that it takes more than emotion to be productive.

Though unhappiness may be a great hindrance to productivity, it cannot erase the fact that some unhappy people are actually productive in the activities they engage in. Some people may be unhappy but are diligent and hardworking. These two qualities may help them to be productive without being really affected by the emotion of happiness or unhappiness.

Happiness on its own has different perspectives, and it depends on the way people like to see it or feel it. The things that make some group of people happy may not be the same kind of things that make other people happy. On the other hand, expression of happiness may not be fully understood, and it may be confusing at times as some people who pretend to be happy are not actually happy, while those who seem unhappy are actually the happy ones. Unhappiness may hinder productivity, but there are people who do not allow their emotions to determine how great they are able to do things.

It is quite unreasonable to say that happy people are productive people because I have seen people who are happy but not productive, and that is why I refuse to agree with the above assertion.

Good Teachers Maintain Proper Relationships With Students

The issue of teachers- students’ relationships in school has continued to be a subject for discussion in our present- day society. Some teachers find it difficult or show outright refusal to maintain proper relationships with their students; while other teachers actually use the relationship they have with students to improve students’ general class performance. Proper relationship between teachers and their students is believed to be one of the most effective ways which helps to make students to enjoy their learning experience while in school. Good teachers always try as much as possible to maintain proper relationships with students in order to enhance learning, while some other teachers do not put this into serious consideration.

Some teachers think that maintaining proper relationships with students will result in students’ lack of concentration during classes. Teachers in this category believe that students will no longer be attentive while they are in class due to close relationships with them. The fact remains that good teachers know how to control their students when they start misbehaving during classes, it does not really affect the nature of their relationships afterwards. It is also clear that students have much respect for teachers who maintain proper relationship with them, than those who do not. From my personal experience, it seems students find it easier to understand courses that are being handled by those teachers who have good relationships with them. The general performance of students in classes is being affected positively or negatively in line with their relationship with the teachers. Proper relationships lead to better performance, while the lack of it leads to poor performance from the students.

Good teachers actually use the proper relationships they have with students to know when the students understand what they are being taught. As a result of the fact that teachers in this category are in good terms with the students, students find it easier to ask relevant questions that will help them to fully understand what they are being taught, and through these questions the teachers are able to determine the areas where the students need extra help. Other teachers who do not really maintain proper relationships with the students find it difficult to determine where the students need help because the students will always pretend to them by not asking relevant questions on any topic. This pretence by students is as a result of lack of proper relationships between them and those teachers in this category. This kind of negative attitude from some teachers does not help students to improve on their class performance and general academic progress.

Good teachers actually maintain proper relationships with students in order to help students to do better in class performance and general learning progress with the use of such relationships.

English Premier League: Which team will break the dominance of the "Big Four?"

In the English Premier League, four teams (Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United) have continued to occupy the top four positions in recent seasons. As a result of this dominance, they are being referred to as the “Big Four”. Other teams like Everton, Aston Villa, Tottenham and recently Manchester City have continued to struggle to break this dominance, but lack of consistency which exist among these teams continue to mar their struggles.

At the beginning of each new season, football lovers around the world have continued to predict teams that are likely to break into the top four positions in the English Premier League, so that one of the “Big Four” will be displaced. But at the end of the season, the “Big Four” teams end up occupying their usual positions.

In the current 2009/ 2010 season that has just began, all fingers point towards Manchester City as the team that will break the dominance of the “Big Four”. After the acquisition of Man City by Abu habi group, they have continued to spend big in the transfer market starting with a record signing of the Brazilian star “Robinho”. This signing did not have much effect on Man City’s position last season as they could not even qualify for the Europa League. But the calibre of players that Man City has succeeded in bringing in during the summer transfer window has continued to give fresh hopes that the dominance of the “Big Four will be broken this current season that has just started on August 15, 2009. Players like Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure were bought from Arsenal; Karlos Teves was bought from their City rivals Manchester United, Roque Santa Cruz was bought from Blackburn.

I believe these players will be able to make their marks, but it will all depend on the consistency of the team to be able to break into the top four positions in the English Premier League. The approach which Man City has used to bring these new set of players has become a source of worry for some English soccer fans as they are being accused of paying more than a players worth thereby creating hype in the cost of players in the general transfer market. But if only Man City could ignore these comments and focus on the best ways to break into these top four positions, then they will not only succeed in proving their critics wrong, but also qualify for the prestigious European Champions League to gather much experience so that in the long run their position in the top four will be consolidated.

In as much as I tip Man City to break the dominance of the “Big four”, it will take guts and consistency to be able to achieve such feat. How much they spend in buying quality players does not really matter but how they are able to utilize these players to achieve their objectives.

Are personal morals decaying?

The principles of right and wrong behavior or accepted standard of behavior could be understood by individuals from different perspectives according to individuals’ idiosyncrasies, but there are actions that some people might consider wrong but prefer carrying out those actions. It is against this background that this article will place its focus in highlighting the decadence in personal morals. It is quite difficult to conclude that personal morals are decaying in other parts of the world because I cannot be everywhere, but judging from the society where I belong, and with the way people behave these days, to say that personal morals are decaying is an understatement.

The rate of dishonesty and cheats among individuals keep increasing on a regular basis. Most people now see wrong doing as a way of life. Some people now treat other people’s lives without any regard, as they can easily sell fake drugs in the open market without considering its negative effects on the health of other people. People now have the guts to eulogize and clap for armed robbers and kidnappers as a result of their display of sophisticated weapons while carrying out their operations. In schools, more people are now involved in examination malpractices, even some parents go to the extent of giving all forms of support to their children to cheat in both internal and external exams. It is sad that things like this will be happening without serious criticisms from other members of the society. More politicians now resort to killing their fellow politicians in a bid to be at the corridors of power. Things are turning from bad to worse.

In business, more people now use deceptive ways and means to lure their customers into buying low quality products at high prices without having the interests of their customers at heart, and the time has gone when customers were kings in business transactions. Even in churches, some pastors’ love for money have made their sermons to be in line with what the rich men in their churches want to hear, and they refuse preaching what is supposed to be heard, which is truth and salvation. May God help us. All these things are happening because greater number of the population has less regard for moral values in my society, I do not know about yours.

Things need to improve, but my fellow citizens should go back to the time when the going was good, and pick back the moral values they dropped long time ago, for our society to be a better place to live in.

Are Parents or Schools to Blame for Low High School Graduation Rates?

There have been protracted arguments over whom to blame between school teachers and parents for low high school graduation rates. I am neither a parent nor a teacher; therefore my view on this subject will be without bias. In as much as I blame the parents to a greater extent, some school teachers should also take smaller portion of the blame. My reason for this is simply because some teachers are not doing enough in training their students to the extent that they will fall in love with their studies, and in so doing, students fail to have high regard for education especially in High school. On the other hand, parents are expected to spend quality time with their children, so that the training they offer will go a long way in making their kids to pay good attention to what their teachers teach in school.

I was trained by both parents and teachers, and I can tell where the greater impact comes from. The problem with our world today is that parents have left their primary responsibility of taking good care of their children, and providing them with proper home training, but consider their work more important than training their kids. This is not helping high school students to fully understand what it means to acquire formal education, and the direct result is low graduation rates among high school students. This parents’ neglect of their kids’ education could be noticed in the way some high school students behave during classes while in school. Some high school students do not have much regard for their teachers, and it is mainly because their parents are not doing enough at home to make them understand the importance of teachers to their education. This actually makes students to get tired of education so soon in life.

Some school teachers who should share a portion of this blame are those that lack the technique of making students to fall in love with their studies. From experience, I have discovered that students show more interest when they are being taught by some teachers, but little interest is being shown by the same group of students when some other teachers teach them. Most of the time, it is not the difference in courses the teachers handle that seem to be the problem, but in the ways and methods these teachers handle their different courses. Some teachers are more experienced, and know how to handle students than the others, and this also contribute to a drop in students’ interests in their studies.

The fact that some teachers lack the technique and method in making their students to fall in love with their studies cannot take away the neglect shown by most parents towards their children’s education. If we actually want to improve high school graduation rates, parents’ primary responsibility of giving their children proper home training must greatly improve.
